Frquently Asked Grooming Questions

How often should my dog be groomed?

This mostly depends on the breed but here are some general guidelines:

  • If you prefer a longer hair style, they should be groomed every 4 weeks.
  • If you prefer a shorter style or a shave down, we recommend every 6 to 8 weeks.
  • Smooth coated bath only dogs (i.e. labs, boxers, etc.) also benefit from grooming every 8 weeks as regular grooming maintains a healthy coat and skin and also keeps ears clean and nails trim.

When should my puppy have his first professional grooming?

Puppy grooming can start as early as 8 weeks old. This allows the pup to get used to the sounds of the grooming salon and other dogs. We recommend a grooming session every month for the first 4 months. We start with a bath, nail trim and ear cleaning. At each session, we do a little more and introduce the clipper slowly; this makes it much easier and less stressful for the pup.

Do I really need to have my dog groomed in the winter?

Many pet owners don’t know that they should groom their dogs during the winter and often neglect to have them groomed when it is cold outside. Dogs need to have proper grooming, even during the winter. They can have a longer trim or should be brushed out, bathed, ears cleaned and nails trimmed. If you choose not to have your dog groomed their hair will become matted and their natural insulation process will not work. Dogs need to be free of mats to stay warm in the winter.

How do you get mats out of the dog’s coat?

We are able to brush out some tangles or mats but if a dog is severely matted we will not demat. It is very painful and your dog’s comfort is our priority. Heavily matted dogs must be shaved to solve the problem. Mats are a serious concern as they may result in skin sores, skin tearing and skin disease.

What if my dog has fleas?

We offer non-toxic flea baths. This only kills the fleas on the dog and does not provide future protection. Monthly flea and tick prevention using Frontline or Advantage is best. If your home has become infested with fleas you will need to use a flea bomb and it may take several months to get rid of them completely. You will also need to treat all the pets in your home with Frontline or Advantage. Wash all bedding; including your pet(s) bedding.
